Game theory is often called the science of strategy.  It uses games to help players make optimal decisions in a competitive setting.

A zero-sum game is a type of game where one player can only win something equal to the amount another player (or a group of players) loses.

Rock paper scissors is a classic zero-sum game …

  • I play a rock, you play a paper, you win.
  • I play scissors, you play paper, I win.

Luck aside, it’s very difficult to consistently win at rock paper scissors, unless I can figure out your strategy. You may not even know you have a strategy, but by studying your behavior, I can likely identify a pattern that gives me an edge.

In many respects, Amazon is also zero-sum game.  Your products are displayed side-by-side with your competitors. If someone makes a purchase on Amazon, they either buy from you or a competitor. Your gain is my loss.

To consistently “win” in this zero-sum game, like in Rock Paper Scissors, you need to understand your competitor’s strategy.

The difference between Amazon and Rock Papers Scissors is that all strategies on Amazon are transparent …

  • You know the product features and benefits your competitors’ are prioritizing.
  • You know which keywords they’re using on the product page
  • You know how they’re advertising and which keywords they rank for

Are you using leveraging competitive information to win on Amazon?  Do you know who your Amazon competitors are? They may not be the same as other channels?
